Our roots in Wyandotte

About Josephine Brighton and the Center

Josephine Marie Brighton is remembered in local Wyandotte history as a pioneer for special education Downriver and throughout Michigan. The school that bears her name continues that legacy of preparing students for greater independence, meaningful work, community participation, and adult life.

Wyandotte Public Schools says the Jo Brighton Skills Center was established in 1973. Today the program serves students from middle school through age 26. Students ages 18–26 receive vocational and work-site experiences alongside instruction in independent living, social skills, adapted physical education, and other transition-focused areas. Vocational offerings described by the district include culinary and bakery training, building maintenance, woodshop, and computer/business technology.

Jo Brighton Special Athletes is connected to this community of students and alumni through year-round sports and competition.
